Radix is the Latin word for "root, that upon which anything is fixed or rests".

The word radix reflects our affiliation with Linux/Unix where the character "/" is commonly referred to as the root level of the filesystem. The word "root" is also synonymous with origin or source and the link here is with the open source movement of which Linux and GNU is part of.
